23 August 2011 - IGA Paper Products Sourced from Indonesia
Questions have been raised about one of our suppliers, Solaris and its parent company Asia Pulp and Paper and potential impact they may be having on Indonesian native forests. We recognise that any destruction of native forest can impact wildlife particularly endangered species, such as the Sumatran Tiger.
We have been alerted to footage on the condition of a Sumatran Tiger apparently due to habitat destruction. We have followed up and are assured the tiger shown was caught in a boar trap set by the indigenous population – it had nothing to do with our supplier Solaris. However the continuing questions about Asia Pulp and Paper, have resulted in Metcash making the decision to find alternate supply for our IGA Signature and Black & Gold products. This is with immediate effect.
Metcash also confirms that no APP companies or affiliates are suppliers of our Metcash branded products. This will remain the case until APP has implemented commitments to stop deforestation.
Metcash and the independently owned and operated IGA supermarkets remain committed to ensuring environmental and social sustainability in our own business practices, our products and our suppliers. We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on community and environmental initiatives every year and follow our strict, new Sustainable Supply Chain Management Program. Our Sustainable Supply Chain Management Program ensures we only supply products that are produced without harming the environment or society.
